Vintage 1960s–70s Steelers

sweatshirts.

This collection covers Pittsburgh Steelers sweatshirts made from 1960 to 1979, from the early 60s to the Chuck Noll dynasty. Built on players drafted in the early 1970s and the Steel Curtain defense, the Steelers won Super Bowls IX, X, XIII and XIV, four titles in six seasons, and their fan base spread far beyond Pittsburgh.

The modern identity started here: the Steelmark logo, first worn in November 1962 with "ers" added in 1963, black helmets from 1963, and black and gold. NFL Properties began licensing team merchandise in 1963. Dealer listings show 70s Steelers crewnecks on Champion and Garan tags. Genuine 70s pieces are scarce, so period tags and honest wear matter most.

Which one to buy

From Oct 3, 2026 listings

A broad search across all of eBay turns up about 361 Steelers sweatshirts for the 70s, but genuinely 1970s pieces are scarce: most results are 80s–90s crewnecks or later Steel Curtain throwbacks, and only three listings here even claim the era. Those three ask from $38 to about $504 delivered, too few and too spread out to call a going rate. A period maker's tag (Champion, Russell, Artex and the like) with Made in USA is what separates a real 70s sweatshirt from a later one, so ask for photos of the neck tag, cuffs and the inside of the print, plus pit-to-pit and length. The $38 Bradshaw Super Bowl graphic is the cheap way in if its tag checks out, the $77 Russell is the collector's bet if a Small fits, and the $504 "boxy graphic" needs tag proof before anyone offers; for most buyers, saving the search and waiting is the sensible move.

NO. 03 · WHAT TO LOOK FOR
  • Super Bowl champions graphics should match the 1974 (IX), 1975 (X), 1978 (XIII) or 1979 (XIV) seasons.
  • Champion's late-60s and 70s labels are colored tags (blue, yellow, red, green or black, often called "bar" tags), always made in USA. Dealers list 70s Steelers sweatshirts on Champion blue bar tags.
  • Garan is another period maker: dealer listings include 70s Steelers raglan sweatshirts on Garan tags.
  • The Steelmark has been the team's logo since 1962, and the Steelers' stencil-style script dates to 1963, so both fit the whole era. Look for wear consistent with age rather than a different logo.
  • A Made in USA tag. Champion's 70s labels always read Made in USA, and a foreign-made tag on a supposed 70s piece is a strong warning sign.
  • Licensing text such as an NFL or NFL Properties mark, or a copyright line on the print. Not every period piece carries one, so weigh it alongside the tag.
NO. 04 · REPRODUCTIONS & BOOTLEGS
  • Licensed retro lines such as Mitchell & Ness (NFL throwbacks since about 2000, owned by Fanatics since 2022), Homage and Junk Food reprint Steel Curtain-era Steelers designs on new blanks. Their own brand tags give them away, and Homage names designs by year (a '93 crewneck, for example), so a year in a listing title proves nothing.
  • A 70s design proves nothing on its own. The NFL's Throwbacks retail collection began in 1991, with Nutmeg Mills making the sweatshirts, so a Steel Curtain-era graphic on a 90s tag is a period retro piece, not a 70s original. The tag and the fabric have to be 70s too.
  • Artificial distressing is one of the red flags dealers list. Even, sanded-looking wear, or a bright, crisp tag on a heavily faded body, doesn't add up for a 50-year-old sweatshirt.
  • A Reebok tag dates NFL gear to 2002-2012, when Reebok held the league's exclusive uniform, sideline and cap license. A Nike tag is later still, since Nike took over the league's uniform contract in 2012.

NO. 05 · SIZING

Sizing on 70s and 80s fleece runs differently from today, and decades of washing can shrink cotton-rich blends, so the tag size is only a starting point. Ask the seller for pit-to-pit and top-to-bottom length in inches and compare them with a sweatshirt that fits you. Raglan-sleeve crews also fit differently through the shoulders than set-in sleeves, so check sleeve length too.

NO. 08 · FIELD NOTES

How do I know a Steelers sweatshirt is really from the 70s?

Start with the tag. A 70s Champion should have a colored bar label and say made in USA; other makers should show period-style labels and content tags. Then check that the graphic, any copyright line and the wear all fit the 70s, not just the design.

Which Super Bowls did the Steelers win in the 70s?

Four: IX after the 1974 season, X after 1975, XIII after 1978 and XIV after 1979. They beat Dallas in X and XIII.

Are 60s Steelers sweatshirts available?

Rarely. The team's licensing arm, NFL Properties, was founded in 1963 and the Steelers didn't start winning until the 70s, so genuine 60s pieces are scarce. Most listings in this collection are 70s dynasty-era pieces.

Does single stitching matter on a vintage sweatshirt?

Not much. Single-stitch hems are a T-shirt dating tell, common on tees made before the late 1990s. Sweatshirts finish the cuffs and waist with ribbed bands, so judge a crewneck by its tag, its licensing text and the copyright year on the print instead.
