Vintage 1990s Steelers

jerseys.

The 90s split cleanly in Pittsburgh. Through 1996 the Steelers wore their 1968 design: black or white jerseys with Northwestern-style sleeve stripes and block numbers. In 1997 the numbers switched to the rounded font used on the helmets, a Steelers logo was added to the left chest, and the TV numbers moved fully onto the shoulders.

The era's names include Rod Woodson (#26) through 1996, Jerome Bettis (#36) from 1996 and quarterback Kordell Stewart (#10). The team reached Super Bowl XXX after the 1995 season. Starter made the on-field jerseys from 1992 to 1996 and Nike from 1997, per the Gridiron Uniform Database. Champion and Starter made the retail replicas.

Which one to buy

From Oct 3, 2026 listings

295 Steelers jerseys are listed for the 90s, mostly at $30–55 delivered, with Kordell Stewart, Jerome Bettis and Rod Woodson the common names. Logo Athletic, Starter and Champion replicas dominate, so prioritise a stated size and ask for a tag photo and close-ups of the numbers, since screen-printed ones crack. Red flags: a Champion Joe Greene at $97 is a 90s-made throwback of a 1970s player priced nearly double the band, and a Starter Dawson comes from a seller whose feedback wasn't captured. Budget buyers should take the $26 white Starter Kordell in size 52, first-time buyers the Logo Athletic Kordell in XL, and collectors the $48 Champion Bettis.

NO. 03 · WHAT TO LOOK FOR
  • Block vs rounded numbers: block numbers mean 1996 or earlier. Rounded numbers matching the helmet font arrived in 1997.
  • Chest logo: the Steelers logo on the left chest was added in 1997, so a jersey with it is from the late 90s or later.
  • Makers: Starter made the on-field jerseys from 1992 to 1996 and Nike from 1997. Starter also made retail replicas through 1998, so the label alone won't settle the year; the number font will.
  • Name color: names on the white jersey were gold with black trim, except in 1997, when they were black.
  • 1994 throwbacks: the Steelers wore 1930s-style vertically striped throwbacks in 1994, and every 1994 jersey carried the diamond 75th Anniversary patch.
  • NFL shield at the collar: on-field jerseys gained a small NFL shield at the bottom of the collar in 1991, so its presence or absence helps date a piece to before or after that season.
  • Champion made replica jerseys for every NFL team from the 1980s until 2000, and Starter made replicas for all teams from 1992 to 1998. These retail replicas are the most common 90s jerseys you will find.
NO. 04 · REPRODUCTIONS & BOOTLEGS
  • Mitchell & Ness has made football throwbacks since 2000. They copy classic designs closely but carry the Mitchell & Ness name on the labels, so check every tag before trusting the design.
  • The Steelers wore a 1962-style throwback with gold helmets from 2007 to 2011 and a 1933 "bumblebee" throwback from 2012 to 2016. Those are later alternates, not 90s jerseys.
  • The basic design never changed, so Reebok (2002–11) and Nike (2012 on) jerseys look close to late-90s ones. Reebok-era jerseys carry the "NFL Equipment" collar shield introduced in 2002.
  • Mitchell & Ness sells its NFL Legacy and Authentic throwbacks in numeric sizes (36 S, 40 M, 44 L, 48 XL, 52 2XL, 56 3XL), so a numeric size on its own does not prove a jersey is old.

NO. 05 · SIZING

Tag sizes can differ between makers such as Champion, Starter and the on-field suppliers, so treat the tag as a starting point. Ask for pit-to-pit (armpit to armpit, laid flat) and back length from collar to hem, and compare them with a jersey you own. Tagged sizes vary by maker and era, and many listings are mis-sized.

NO. 08 · FIELD NOTES

Block or rounded numbers: what year is my Steelers jersey?

Block numbers with no chest logo mean 1996 or earlier. Rounded numbers that match the helmet, plus the Steelers logo on the left chest, mean 1997 or later. A black name on a white jersey points to 1997 itself.

Is a Bettis or Stewart jersey always from the 90s?

No. Jerome Bettis played for Pittsburgh from 1996 through 2005, so many Bettis jerseys are 2000s Reebok pieces. A 90s example should carry a Starter, Nike or Champion label and lack the "NFL Equipment" collar shield used from 2002.

Starter or Nike?

Starter made the on-field jerseys from 1992 to 1996 and Nike from 1997 to 1999. Starter also sold replicas for every team from 1992 to 1998. Pair the label with the number font to date the jersey.

How do I tell a 90s original from a Mitchell & Ness?

Read every label. Mitchell & Ness has made football throwbacks since 2000 and puts its own name on the tags, and it sells them in numeric sizes (44 is a large), so a numeric size is not a sign of age. Then check the details against the year the jersey claims to be from: the collar shield, any patches and the design changes listed above.
