Vintage 1990s Giants

sweatshirts.

This collection covers New York Giants sweatshirts made from 1990 to 1999. The decade opened with a title: the Giants beat Buffalo 20-19 in Super Bowl XXV after the 1990 season, their second championship in five seasons after Super Bowl XXI.

Through the whole decade the team's mark was the bold italic "GIANTS" wordmark, which replaced the uppercase "NY" in 1976 and appeared on helmets through the 1980s and 1990s. The lowercase "ny" returned as the primary logo in 2000, which makes dating straightforward. Colors were royal blue, red and white. Logo 7, Starter, Salem Sportswear, Nutmeg Mills and Pro Player made licensed Giants fleece. Super Bowl XXV pieces on period tags are the highlight.

Which one to buy

From Oct 3, 2026 listings

38 Giants sweatshirts are listed, most at $35–65 delivered, which makes this one of the cheaper teams to buy into. Look for period labels — Salem, Trench, The Game, Russell Athletic, Champion and Logo Athletic all appear — and dated graphics such as Super Bowl XXV (the 1990 season) or the 1994 NFL 75th-anniversary Trench piece; read titles for "thrashed" or "distressed", which some buyers want and others don't. The NOS Eastern Division crewneck should still have its tags, so ask for a photo, and the $217 Pro Player XXL is more than four times the typical price for a common maker. Seller feedback wasn't captured, so check it on each item page. Collectors should grab the $33 Super Bowl XXV crewneck, value hunters the $40 embroidered Salem, and first-time buyers the $43 The Game crewneck in Large.

NO. 03 · WHAT TO LOOK FOR
  • The wordmark is the dating line. A "GIANTS" script logo fits 1976-1999; a lowercase "ny" as the main logo fits 2000 or later (or 1961-74).
  • Super Bowl XXV champions graphics belong to the 1990 season, when the Giants beat Buffalo 20-19.
  • The switch to the "GIANTS" wordmark was sparked by the team's move to the Meadowlands in New Jersey; the lowercase "ny" came back as the primary logo in 2000.
  • Maker tags of the decade: Logo 7 (renamed Logo Athletic in 1997), Starter, Salem Sportswear, Nutmeg Mills and its Lee Sport label (from 1995), Russell Athletic and Pro Player.
  • Tag history narrows the date: Salem was sold to Fruit of the Loom in 1993 and folded into Pro Player, Russell ended its pro football licensing in 1997, and Logo Athletic and Starter were both bankrupt by about 1999.
  • A copyright year printed under the graphic (for example, © 1994) plus licensing text such as "Officially Licensed NFL Product" or an NFL Properties mark. The year should agree with the tag and the construction.
  • A Made in USA tag. Big makers moved sewing to Mexico and the Caribbean during the 90s, so a US-made tag supports an earlier date, while a Latin American tag usually points later in the decade.
NO. 04 · REPRODUCTIONS & BOOTLEGS
  • Licensed retro lines such as Mitchell & Ness (NFL throwbacks since about 2000, owned by Fanatics since 2022), Homage and Junk Food reprint old Giants logos on new blanks. Their own brand tags give them away, and Homage names designs by year (a '93 crewneck, for example), so a year in a listing title proves nothing.
  • A Reebok tag dates NFL gear to 2002-2012, when Reebok held the league's exclusive uniform, sideline and cap license. A Nike tag is later still, since Nike took over the league's uniform contract in 2012.
  • Script-wordmark designs are a popular retro theme. If the piece has a 90s look but a modern brand tag, it is a reissue.
  • A familiar label is not automatic proof. Starter is still an active NFL licensee and the Nutmeg Mills name has been revived for vintage-style graphics, so check that the tag design, fabric and country of origin fit the period, not just the brand name.
  • Dealers list the same red flags again and again: wrong neck tags for the era, missing licensing text, a copyright year that doesn't match the tag, and artificial distressing. A cut-out tag removes the best evidence, so price that piece as unverified.

NO. 05 · SIZING

Tagged sizes from the 90s don't line up neatly with modern sizing, and cotton-rich fleece shrinks in hot washes, which is why Champion patented its shrink-resisting Reverse Weave cut. Ask the seller for pit-to-pit and top-to-bottom length in inches and compare them with a sweatshirt you already own. A stretched waistband or blown-out cuffs will make it fit looser than the numbers suggest.

NO. 08 · FIELD NOTES

Why does my 90s Giants sweatshirt say GIANTS instead of NY?

Because that was the team's logo. The italic GIANTS wordmark replaced the uppercase NY in 1976 and ran through 1999. The lowercase ny came back as the primary logo in 2000.

How do I check a Super Bowl XXV crewneck is period-made?

The Giants beat Buffalo 20-19 to finish the 1990 season. An original should have a 90s licensee tag, licensing text and a copyright year from that season or just after. A modern retro brand tag or a Reebok or Nike tag means it was made later.

Does single stitching matter on a vintage sweatshirt?

Not much. Single-stitch hems are a T-shirt dating tell, common on tees made before the late 1990s. Sweatshirts finish the cuffs and waist with ribbed bands, so judge a crewneck by its tag, its licensing text and the copyright year on the print instead.

Can a lowercase ny piece be from the 90s?

Not as the team's primary logo. The lowercase ny was used from 1961 until 1975 and returned in 2000. A 90s-looking piece built around it is either from 2000 on or a retro design.
