Vintage 1990s Broncos

sweatshirts.

This collection covers Denver Broncos sweatshirts made from 1990 to 1999, the last decade of John Elway's career. It splits cleanly in two. Through 1996 the Broncos wore orange and royal blue with the "D" logo introduced in 1968, the look of the 1977 "Orange Crush" era. On February 4, 1997, they unveiled a new horse-head logo and swapped royal blue for navy, then won Super Bowls XXXII and XXXIII in the new design.

Logo 7, Starter, Salem Sportswear, Nutmeg Mills and Pro Player all made licensed Broncos fleece. The logo tells you which half of the decade you're holding, and the tag confirms it.

Which one to buy

From Oct 3, 2026 listings

56 Broncos sweatshirts are listed, most at $40–85 delivered, and the 1997 logo change makes dating easy: the orange 'D' logo is pre-1997 and the horse head is 1997 on, which covers the Super Bowl XXXII and XXXIII champions pieces that dominate supply. Prioritise a period tag (Logo Athletic, Pro Player, Starter, Trench, Logo 7, Nutmeg, Lee Sport) and ask for a tag photo, pit-to-pit and length, since most titles here leave out the size. Seller feedback wasn't captured for these listings, so check it on each item page. Red flags: a $192 Nutmeg Mills mascot crewneck at over three times the median, and one seller's identical generic '90's Denver Broncos Football Sweatshirt' titles, fine but unknown until you see the tag. Most buyers should take the $49 Super Bowl XXXII Logo Athletic crewneck; the $53 Pro Player Super Bowl XXXIII is the value alternative.

NO. 03 · WHAT TO LOOK FOR
  • The 1997 redesign is the dating line. Orange and royal blue with the "D" logo means 1996 or earlier; navy with the horse-head logo means 1997 or later.
  • Super Bowl champions graphics belong to the 1997 season (XXXII, over Green Bay) or the 1998 season (XXXIII, over Atlanta), so they should carry the new logo and navy.
  • AFC champions gear with the old logo can still be period-correct: Denver won the conference in the 1989 season, its third Super Bowl trip in four years.
  • Maker tags of the decade: Logo 7 (renamed Logo Athletic in 1997), Starter, Salem Sportswear, Nutmeg Mills and its Lee Sport label (from 1995), Russell Athletic and Pro Player.
  • Tag history narrows the date: Salem was sold to Fruit of the Loom in 1993 and folded into Pro Player, Russell ended its pro football licensing in 1997, and Logo Athletic and Starter were both bankrupt by about 1999.
  • A copyright year printed under the graphic (for example, © 1994) plus licensing text such as "Officially Licensed NFL Product" or an NFL Properties mark. The year should agree with the tag and the construction.
  • A Made in USA tag. Big makers moved sewing to Mexico and the Caribbean during the 90s, so a US-made tag supports an earlier date, while a Latin American tag usually points later in the decade.
NO. 04 · REPRODUCTIONS & BOOTLEGS
  • Licensed retro lines such as Mitchell & Ness (NFL throwbacks since about 2000, owned by Fanatics since 2022), Homage and Junk Food reprint the old "D" Broncos logo on new blanks. Their own brand tags give them away, and Homage names designs by year (a '93 crewneck, for example), so a year in a listing title proves nothing.
  • In 2024 the Broncos introduced new uniforms with a throwback to the 1977 Orange Crush look, so new gear with the old "D" look exists. Check the tag before assuming orange means old.
  • A Reebok tag dates NFL gear to 2002-2012, when Reebok held the league's exclusive uniform, sideline and cap license. A Nike tag is later still, since Nike took over the league's uniform contract in 2012.
  • A championship crewneck with the pre-1997 "D" logo and royal blue does not match the title seasons and deserves a close look at the tag and print date.
  • Dealers list the same red flags again and again: wrong neck tags for the era, missing licensing text, a copyright year that doesn't match the tag, and artificial distressing. A cut-out tag removes the best evidence, so price that piece as unverified.

NO. 05 · SIZING

Tagged sizes from the 90s don't line up neatly with modern sizing, and cotton-rich fleece shrinks in hot washes, which is why Champion patented its shrink-resisting Reverse Weave cut. Ask the seller for pit-to-pit and top-to-bottom length in inches and compare them with a sweatshirt you already own. A stretched waistband or blown-out cuffs will make it fit looser than the numbers suggest.

NO. 08 · FIELD NOTES

How do I date a Broncos sweatshirt from the 90s?

Look at the logo and colors first. The Broncos changed both on February 4, 1997: the "D" logo and royal blue gave way to a horse-head logo and navy. Then confirm with the maker tag and the copyright year on the print.

Which Super Bowls did the Broncos win in the 90s?

Super Bowl XXXII after the 1997 season, beating Green Bay 31-24, and Super Bowl XXXIII after the 1998 season, beating Atlanta 34-19. Both came in the new 1997 uniforms.

Is the old "D" logo more collectible than the horse head?

It depends on the buyer. The orange "D" pieces carry the older look, while the late-90s pieces carry the championship story. Design, condition and an intact period tag matter more than which logo is printed.

Does single stitching matter on a vintage sweatshirt?

Not much. Single-stitch hems are a T-shirt dating tell, common on tees made before the late 1990s. Sweatshirts finish the cuffs and waist with ribbed bands, so judge a crewneck by its tag, its licensing text and the copyright year on the print instead.
