Vintage 1990s Broncos

jerseys.

The 1997 redesign splits the 90s Broncos in two. Through 1996 the team wore its "Orange Crush" look from 1968: orange home jerseys, royal blue trim and the horse-in-a-"D" logo. In February 1997 it unveiled navy home jerseys, a horse-head logo, a new number font and a streak down the sides, then won Super Bowls XXXII and XXXIII in that uniform.

John Elway (#7) played the whole decade and retired after the 1998 season. Terrell Davis (#30) arrived in 1995. On-field jerseys were Wilson through 1995 and Nike from 1996, per the Gridiron Uniform Database, and Nike's art director helped create the 1997 design. Champion and Starter made the retail replicas.

Which one to buy

From Oct 3, 2026 listings

385 Broncos jerseys are listed for the 90s, most at $30–50 delivered, split between orange pieces from before the 1997 redesign and navy ones after it. John Elway and Terrell Davis are the names; Champion, Starter, Logo 7, Nike and Puma replicas are plentiful, so don't pay over the band without an Authentic tag or genuine deadstock. Ask for a tag photo with the numeric size (44 = M, 48 = L) and close-ups of the numbers. Red flags: a Starter Elway at about $135, nearly three times the band top, and a Champion Elway whose title is copied word for word from another seller's $31 listing, posted by a seller whose feedback wasn't captured. Budget buyers should take the $18 Starter Neil Smith or the $20 Champion Terrell Davis, first-time buyers the $38 Starter Elway in Large, and collectors the $43 Champion Elway.

NO. 03 · WHAT TO LOOK FOR
  • Orange or navy: an orange home jersey with royal blue trim is the pre-1997 design. Navy home jerseys, the horse-head logo and the side streak mean 1997 or later.
  • Orange alternates: the Broncos added an orange jersey in the new streaked style in 2002. An orange jersey with the side streak and the newer number font is a 2000s piece, not pre-1997.
  • On-field maker: Wilson (1990–94, labeled Wilson Staff in 1995), then Nike from 1996.
  • Super Bowl patches: game patches became standard from Super Bowl XXXII (January 1998), so jerseys from the Broncos' two title games can carry the XXXII or XXXIII patch.
  • 1994 throwback: the Broncos wore 1965-style throwbacks for two games in 1994, the season every team wore the diamond 75th Anniversary patch.
  • NFL shield at the collar: on-field jerseys gained a small NFL shield at the bottom of the collar in 1991, so its presence or absence helps date a piece to before or after that season.
  • Champion made replica jerseys for every NFL team from the 1980s until 2000, and Starter made replicas for all teams from 1992 to 1998. These retail replicas are the most common 90s jerseys you will find.
NO. 04 · REPRODUCTIONS & BOOTLEGS
  • Mitchell & Ness has made football throwbacks since 2000. They copy classic designs closely but carry the Mitchell & Ness name on the labels, so check every tag before trusting the design.
  • Orange became the primary home jersey again in 2012, and the 2024 "Mile High Collection" added a 1977 Orange Crush-style throwback. New orange jerseys carry Nike labels and the NFL shield design used since 2012.
  • The 1997 design was used into the 2020s, so a navy Elway-era-style jersey can be a 2002–11 Reebok or later Nike piece. Check the label and the collar shield.
  • Mitchell & Ness sells its NFL Legacy and Authentic throwbacks in numeric sizes (36 S, 40 M, 44 L, 48 XL, 52 2XL, 56 3XL), so a numeric size on its own does not prove a jersey is old.

NO. 05 · SIZING

Tag sizes can differ between makers such as Champion, Starter and the on-field suppliers, so treat the tag as a starting point. Ask for pit-to-pit (armpit to armpit, laid flat) and back length from collar to hem, and compare them with a jersey you own. Tagged sizes vary by maker and era, and many listings are mis-sized.

NO. 08 · FIELD NOTES

When did the Broncos switch from orange to navy?

The new logo and uniforms were unveiled on February 4, 1997. Navy replaced royal blue, and navy home jerseys replaced the orange ones the team had worn as its main home color since 1962.

Can a navy Elway jersey be from the 90s?

Yes. Elway played the 1997 and 1998 seasons in the navy design and won both Super Bowls in it. A 90s example should carry a Nike, Champion or Starter label rather than Reebok (2002 on).

Wilson or Nike?

Wilson made the on-field jerseys from 1990 to 1995 and Nike from 1996. Champion and Starter made fan replicas through the decade. A Wilson label points to the orange era; Nike can be either side of the 1997 change.

How do I tell a 90s original from a Mitchell & Ness?

Read every label. Mitchell & Ness has made football throwbacks since 2000 and puts its own name on the tags, and it sells them in numeric sizes (44 is a large), so a numeric size is not a sign of age. Then check the details against the year the jersey claims to be from: the collar shield, any patches and the design changes listed above.
