Vintage 1990s Dolphins

sweatshirts.

This collection covers Miami Dolphins sweatshirts made from 1990 to 1999, the second half of Dan Marino's career. Marino quarterbacked Miami from 1983 through 1999, and Don Shula coached through 1995. In 1996 the team's stadium became Pro Player Stadium, named for Fruit of the Loom's sports apparel division.

The look was aqua and orange with the leaping dolphin in a helmet over a sunburst, the team's logo since 1966. In 1997 it was updated with a simpler sunburst and a darker, more serious dolphin. Logo 7, Starter, Salem Sportswear, Nutmeg Mills and Pro Player made licensed Dolphins fleece. Early-decade pieces with the original logo and a period tag are the ones to look for.

Which one to buy

From Oct 3, 2026 listings

55 Dolphins sweatshirts are listed, most at $45–70 delivered, and period tags are easy to find: Lee Sport and Nutmeg, Logo 7, Starter, Salem, Russell Athletic and Logo Athletic all turn up. Favour a listing that names its maker and size, and ask for a tag photo plus pit-to-pit and length on anything that doesn't, including one seller's run of generic "90's Miami Dolphins Football Sweatshirt" listings. The 1996 Lee Sport Nutmeg crewneck appears in five listings at $35–68 delivered, so don't pay the top of that spread, and the $163 Logo Athletic Large needs a clear reason to cost more than twice the band. Seller feedback wasn't captured for these listings, so check it on each item page. Bargain hunters should take the $35 Lee Sport Nutmeg, first-time buyers the XL Logo 7, collectors the stitched-logo Starter, and anyone handy with a needle the ripped $20 Russell Pro Line.

NO. 03 · WHAT TO LOOK FOR
  • The 1997 logo update is the dating line. The original sunburst and lighter dolphin point to 1996 or earlier; the simplified sunburst and darker dolphin point to 1997 or later.
  • Navy drop shadows on jersey-style numbers arrived in 1997. Aqua and orange without navy matches the earlier look.
  • Pro Player tags have an extra local link: Fruit of the Loom's Pro Player division bought the stadium naming rights in 1996.
  • Maker tags of the decade: Logo 7 (renamed Logo Athletic in 1997), Starter, Salem Sportswear, Nutmeg Mills and its Lee Sport label (from 1995), Russell Athletic and Pro Player.
  • Tag history narrows the date: Salem was sold to Fruit of the Loom in 1993 and folded into Pro Player, Russell ended its pro football licensing in 1997, and Logo Athletic and Starter were both bankrupt by about 1999.
  • A copyright year printed under the graphic (for example, © 1994) plus licensing text such as "Officially Licensed NFL Product" or an NFL Properties mark. The year should agree with the tag and the construction.
  • A Made in USA tag. Big makers moved sewing to Mexico and the Caribbean during the 90s, so a US-made tag supports an earlier date, while a Latin American tag usually points later in the decade.
NO. 04 · REPRODUCTIONS & BOOTLEGS
  • Licensed retro lines such as Mitchell & Ness (NFL throwbacks since about 2000, owned by Fanatics since 2022), Homage and Junk Food reprint the original leaping-dolphin logo on new blanks. Their own brand tags give them away, and Homage names designs by year (a '93 crewneck, for example), so a year in a listing title proves nothing.
  • The Dolphins replaced the leaping dolphin with a new logo in 2013, so new gear with the old logo is a retro product by definition. Check for a modern brand tag.
  • A Reebok tag dates NFL gear to 2002-2012, when Reebok held the league's exclusive uniform, sideline and cap license. A Nike tag is later still, since Nike took over the league's uniform contract in 2012.
  • A familiar label is not automatic proof. Starter is still an active NFL licensee and the Nutmeg Mills name has been revived for vintage-style graphics, so check that the tag design, fabric and country of origin fit the period, not just the brand name.
  • Dealers list the same red flags again and again: wrong neck tags for the era, missing licensing text, a copyright year that doesn't match the tag, and artificial distressing. A cut-out tag removes the best evidence, so price that piece as unverified.

NO. 05 · SIZING

Tagged sizes from the 90s don't line up neatly with modern sizing, and cotton-rich fleece shrinks in hot washes, which is why Champion patented its shrink-resisting Reverse Weave cut. Ask the seller for pit-to-pit and top-to-bottom length in inches and compare them with a sweatshirt you already own. A stretched waistband or blown-out cuffs will make it fit looser than the numbers suggest.

NO. 08 · FIELD NOTES

How can I tell an early-90s Dolphins logo from a late-90s one?

The 1997 update simplified the sunburst and gave the dolphin a darker color and a more serious expression. The pre-1997 version has the fuller sunburst and lighter dolphin. Confirm with the tag and the copyright year.

Is a Pro Player tag a good sign?

It is a genuine 90s licensee. Pro Player was Fruit of the Loom's sports apparel division, it absorbed Salem Sportswear after 1993, and the brand was liquidated in 2001 after Fruit of the Loom's bankruptcy. Make sure the tag style and fabric fit the period.

Does single stitching matter on a vintage sweatshirt?

Not much. Single-stitch hems are a T-shirt dating tell, common on tees made before the late 1990s. Sweatshirts finish the cuffs and waist with ribbed bands, so judge a crewneck by its tag, its licensing text and the copyright year on the print instead.

Are Marino designs from his playing years?

Only if the tag and print date say so. Marino played through 1999, so 90s Marino pieces can be period-made, but retro lines still produce Marino-era designs. A 90s licensee tag and a matching copyright year are the proof.
