Vintage 1990s Lions

sweatshirts.

This collection covers Detroit Lions sweatshirts made from 1990 to 1999, the Barry Sanders decade. Sanders arrived in 1989 and won Offensive Rookie of the Year. In 1991 he helped Detroit to a 12-4 record, its first division title in eight years and a playoff win. He ran for 2,053 yards in 1997, then retired before the 1999 season.

The Lions looked as they long had: Honolulu blue and silver with the classic lion logo, before black trim arrived in 2003 and a redrawn lion in 2009. Logo 7, Starter, Salem Sportswear, Nutmeg Mills and Pro Player made licensed Lions crewnecks. Sanders-era pieces on period tags, with no black in the logo, are the ones to look for.

Which one to buy

From Oct 3, 2026 listings

A broad search across all of eBay turns up about 347 Detroit Lions sweatshirts, but only a fraction are genuine 90s pieces, and the period crewnecks worth having mostly sit at $55–95 delivered. Pay for a named period maker and a Made in USA tag: this snapshot has Salem Sportswear, Artex, Logo 7, Lee Sport and Logo Athletic, and every seller should send a tag photo, pit-to-pit and length. Red flags are a "Retro" Starter hoodie at about $153, which could be one of Starter's modern reissues, a $188 Logo Athletic crewneck with no size, and cut-off titles like the Lee Sport that ends in "HAS", which may hide a flaw. Four of the eight sellers' feedback wasn't captured, so check it on the item page. Budget buyers should take the $25 Made in USA Large from a 100% seller, most people the $76 Salem Sportswear Large, and collectors the $76 1993 Artex XL from the same seller.

NO. 03 · WHAT TO LOOK FOR
  • No black in the logo or trim. Black was added to the Lions' logo and jerseys in 2003, so black trim points to 2003 or later.
  • The 2009 logo, with a flowing mane and fangs, is a later design; 90s pieces show the earlier lion.
  • Honolulu blue and silver are the team colors, used since 1934.
  • Maker tags of the decade: Logo 7 (renamed Logo Athletic in 1997), Starter, Salem Sportswear, Nutmeg Mills and its Lee Sport label (from 1995), Russell Athletic and Pro Player.
  • Tag history narrows the date: Salem was sold to Fruit of the Loom in 1993 and folded into Pro Player, Russell ended its pro football licensing in 1997, and Logo Athletic and Starter were both bankrupt by about 1999.
  • A copyright year printed under the graphic (for example, © 1994) plus licensing text such as "Officially Licensed NFL Product" or an NFL Properties mark. The year should agree with the tag and the construction.
  • A Made in USA tag. Big makers moved sewing to Mexico and the Caribbean during the 90s, so a US-made tag supports an earlier date, while a Latin American tag usually points later in the decade.
NO. 04 · REPRODUCTIONS & BOOTLEGS
  • Licensed retro lines such as Mitchell & Ness (NFL throwbacks since about 2000, owned by Fanatics since 2022), Homage and Junk Food reprint the classic Lions logo and Barry Sanders designs on new blanks. Their own brand tags give them away, and Homage names designs by year (a '93 crewneck, for example), so a year in a listing title proves nothing.
  • A Reebok tag dates NFL gear to 2002-2012, when Reebok held the league's exclusive uniform, sideline and cap license. A Nike tag is later still, since Nike took over the league's uniform contract in 2012.
  • Sanders designs are a favorite of retro lines. A bright, crisp Sanders crewneck with no copyright year and a modern tag is a reissue.
  • A familiar label is not automatic proof. Starter is still an active NFL licensee and the Nutmeg Mills name has been revived for vintage-style graphics, so check that the tag design, fabric and country of origin fit the period, not just the brand name.
  • Dealers list the same red flags again and again: wrong neck tags for the era, missing licensing text, a copyright year that doesn't match the tag, and artificial distressing. A cut-out tag removes the best evidence, so price that piece as unverified.

NO. 05 · SIZING

Tagged sizes from the 90s don't line up neatly with modern sizing, and cotton-rich fleece shrinks in hot washes, which is why Champion patented its shrink-resisting Reverse Weave cut. Ask the seller for pit-to-pit and top-to-bottom length in inches and compare them with a sweatshirt you already own. A stretched waistband or blown-out cuffs will make it fit looser than the numbers suggest.

NO. 08 · FIELD NOTES

How do I know a Lions sweatshirt is from the 90s and not the 2000s?

Check for black. The Lions added black trim to their logo and jerseys in 2003 and redrew the lion in 2009, so a 90s piece shows only Honolulu blue, silver and white. Confirm with the tag and copyright year.

When did Barry Sanders play for Detroit?

From 1989 through 1998. He made the Pro Bowl in each of his ten seasons and retired early, before the 1999 season. Sanders designs dated within those years can be period pieces.

Does single stitching matter on a vintage sweatshirt?

Not much. Single-stitch hems are a T-shirt dating tell, common on tees made before the late 1990s. Sweatshirts finish the cuffs and waist with ribbed bands, so judge a crewneck by its tag, its licensing text and the copyright year on the print instead.

Did the Lions win anything in the 90s?

Division titles, including 1991, when they went 12-4 and won a playoff game. There are no Lions Super Bowl champions pieces from the decade.
