Vintage 1990s Lions

jerseys.

The 90s Lions are Barry Sanders' Lions. Sanders wore #20 for his whole career, 1989 to 1998, and receiver Herman Moore (#84) joined in 1991. The uniform stayed close to the classic: Honolulu blue or white jerseys, silver pants, and TV numbers on the sleeves until 1999, when they moved to the shoulders. Black trim did not arrive until 2003.

The Lions changed on-field suppliers often: MacGregor in 1990, Wilson from 1991 to 1993, Apex in 1994, Reebok from 1995 to 1998 and Puma in 1999, per the Gridiron Uniform Database. Champion and Starter made the retail replicas.

Which one to buy

From Oct 3, 2026 listings

Only 86 Lions jerseys are listed for the 90s, and most ask $45–90 delivered; nearly all are Barry Sanders #20, which is why this band runs higher than the Packers' or Cowboys'. Prioritise an era maker (Champion, Starter, Logo Athletic, Logo 7, Russell, Puma) in a numeric size (48 = L, 52 = XL), and ask for a tag photo and close-ups of the numbers. Red flags: a Pro Line Authentic Herman Moore at about $470, five times the band top; 'Vintage 90s' listings for a Reebok Herman Moore and a Champion James Stewart, which can't be 90s pieces (Reebok became the NFL's supplier in 2002 and Stewart joined Detroit in 2000); and a 0% feedback seller offering a Champion Barry at about $61. Budget buyers should take the $34 Champion Barry in 48, first-time buyers the $36 Starter mesh, and collectors the MacGregor Sand-Knit Barry at $134.

NO. 03 · WHAT TO LOOK FOR
  • No black: Lions jerseys gained black trim in 2003. Black on the numbers or trim means it is not a 90s jersey.
  • TV numbers: on the sleeves through 1998, moved to the shoulders in 1999.
  • On-field maker by year: MacGregor (1990), Wilson (1991–93), Apex (1994), Reebok (1995–98), Puma (1999). A Reebok Lions jersey can be a genuine 90s piece.
  • 1994 throwback: a 1935-style Honolulu blue jersey with silver numbers and no sleeve TV numbers, worn for the NFL's 75th season. All 1994 jerseys carried the diamond 75th Anniversary patch.
  • NFL shield at the collar: on-field jerseys gained a small NFL shield at the bottom of the collar in 1991, so its presence or absence helps date a piece to before or after that season.
  • Champion made replica jerseys for every NFL team from the 1980s until 2000, and Starter made replicas for all teams from 1992 to 1998. These retail replicas are the most common 90s jerseys you will find.
  • Make sure the maker, the era and the design agree. A label from a company that did not make that team's gear in that period, or a design detail from a later season, means the jersey is newer or not what it claims to be.
NO. 04 · REPRODUCTIONS & BOOTLEGS
  • Mitchell & Ness has made football throwbacks since 2000. They copy classic designs closely but carry the Mitchell & Ness name on the labels, so check every tag before trusting the design.
  • The Lions wore 1950s-style jerseys on Thanksgiving from 2001 to 2004 and have had a throwback alternate since 2008. Jerseys in those styles are not 90s designs.
  • The 2017 and 2024 redesigns returned to a clean blue-and-silver look without black, so a modern Nike jersey can resemble a 90s one. Check for Nike labels and the NFL shield design used since 2012.
  • Mitchell & Ness sells its NFL Legacy and Authentic throwbacks in numeric sizes (36 S, 40 M, 44 L, 48 XL, 52 2XL, 56 3XL), so a numeric size on its own does not prove a jersey is old.

NO. 05 · SIZING

Tag sizes can differ between makers such as Champion, Starter and the on-field suppliers, so treat the tag as a starting point. Ask for pit-to-pit (armpit to armpit, laid flat) and back length from collar to hem, and compare them with a jersey you own. Tagged sizes vary by maker and era, and many listings are mis-sized.

How can I date a Barry Sanders jersey?

Sanders played only for Detroit (1989–98), so every Sanders jersey is a Lions jersey. Check the maker (MacGregor, Wilson, Apex, Reebok, Champion or Starter all fit the decade), make sure there is no black trim, and look for the NFL shield at the collar, which places it in 1991 or later.

Is a Reebok or Puma Lions jersey really vintage?

It can be. Reebok made the Lions' on-field jerseys from 1995 to 1998 and Puma in 1999, years before Reebok's league-wide deal began in 2002. The design should still match: no black trim, and TV numbers on the sleeves before 1999.

Did the Lions wear a different jersey in 1994?

Yes, in selected games. For the NFL's 75th season they wore a 1935-style throwback: Honolulu blue with silver numbers and no TV numbers. Every 1994 jersey carried the diamond 75th Anniversary patch.

How do I tell a 90s original from a Mitchell & Ness?

Read every label. Mitchell & Ness has made football throwbacks since 2000 and puts its own name on the tags, and it sells them in numeric sizes (44 is a large), so a numeric size is not a sign of age. Then check the details against the year the jersey claims to be from: the collar shield, any patches and the design changes listed above.
