Vintage 1990s Oilers

sweatshirts.

This collection covers the franchise's 1990s sweatshirts, which are mostly Houston Oilers pieces. The Oilers played in Houston through 1996, became the Tennessee Oilers for 1997 in Memphis and 1998 in Nashville, and were renamed the Tennessee Titans in 1999 with new colors. That year they reached Super Bowl XXXIV.

The Oilers wore Columbia blue, white and scarlet, with the oil derrick logo. The decade started strong, with Warren Moon and a playoff streak from 1987 to 1993. Logo 7, Starter, Salem Sportswear, Nutmeg Mills and Pro Player made licensed Oilers fleece. Since the Oilers name was retired in 1999, Houston-era originals on period tags are the heart of this collection.

Which one to buy

From Oct 3, 2026 listings

A broad search across all of eBay turns up about 106 Oilers sweatshirts, but only a fraction are genuine period Houston pieces, and those mostly go for $40–85 delivered. The team left Houston after the 1996 season, so a real Houston Oilers sweatshirt is 1997 or older ("Tennessee Oilers" was the transitional 1997–98 name), and several sellers in this search offer new "remake", "reprinted" or "classic style" Oilers crewnecks, so ask every seller for a tag photo before paying. Prioritise period makers such as Logo 7, Nutmeg, Starter, Russell, Lee Sport, Pro Player, Marks and Color Works, plus a Made in USA tag, and treat generic titles with no maker as unproven until you see the tag. Budget buyers should take the $28 red Marks crewneck in Large, listed as new without tags, most people the $50 Russell Athletic big-print crewneck, and collectors the $86 1991 AFC Central Division piece.

NO. 03 · WHAT TO LOOK FOR
  • Read the city and name. "Houston Oilers" pieces date to 1996 or earlier; "Tennessee Oilers" pieces are from 1997-98 only; "Titans" pieces start in 1999.
  • Columbia blue, white and scarlet with the derrick logo is the Oilers look. Navy, Titans blue and silver belong to the 1999 Titans rebrand.
  • Division champions graphics should match 1991 or 1993, the Oilers' only two division titles.
  • Titans AFC champions and Super Bowl XXXIV graphics belong to the 1999 season, when Tennessee lost to St. Louis 23-16.
  • Maker tags of the decade: Logo 7 (renamed Logo Athletic in 1997), Starter, Salem Sportswear, Nutmeg Mills and its Lee Sport label (from 1995), Russell Athletic and Pro Player.
  • A copyright year printed under the graphic (for example, © 1994) plus licensing text such as "Officially Licensed NFL Product" or an NFL Properties mark. The year should agree with the tag and the construction.
  • A Made in USA tag. Big makers moved sewing to Mexico and the Caribbean during the 90s, so a US-made tag supports an earlier date, while a Latin American tag usually points later in the decade.
NO. 04 · REPRODUCTIONS & BOOTLEGS
  • Licensed retro lines such as Mitchell & Ness (NFL throwbacks since about 2000, owned by Fanatics since 2022), Homage and Junk Food reprint old Oilers logos on new blanks. Their own brand tags give them away, and Homage names designs by year (a '93 crewneck, for example), so a year in a listing title proves nothing.
  • The Oilers name was retired when the team became the Titans, so any Oilers piece is either period-made or a later retro product. The tag decides which.
  • A Reebok tag dates NFL gear to 2002-2012, when Reebok held the league's exclusive uniform, sideline and cap license. A Nike tag is later still, since Nike took over the league's uniform contract in 2012.
  • A familiar label is not automatic proof. Starter is still an active NFL licensee and the Nutmeg Mills name has been revived for vintage-style graphics, so check that the tag design, fabric and country of origin fit the period, not just the brand name.
  • Dealers list the same red flags again and again: wrong neck tags for the era, missing licensing text, a copyright year that doesn't match the tag, and artificial distressing. A cut-out tag removes the best evidence, so price that piece as unverified.

NO. 05 · SIZING

Tagged sizes from the 90s don't line up neatly with modern sizing, and cotton-rich fleece shrinks in hot washes, which is why Champion patented its shrink-resisting Reverse Weave cut. Ask the seller for pit-to-pit and top-to-bottom length in inches and compare them with a sweatshirt you already own. A stretched waistband or blown-out cuffs will make it fit looser than the numbers suggest.

NO. 08 · FIELD NOTES

Why is an Oilers sweatshirt listed under the Titans?

They are the same franchise. The Houston Oilers moved to Tennessee after the 1996 season, played two years as the Tennessee Oilers, and became the Titans in 1999. The team kept the Oilers' history and records.

Are Tennessee Oilers pieces rare?

The name lasted only two seasons, 1997 and 1998, and the team drew small crowds in Memphis, so Tennessee Oilers gear is a much smaller niche than Houston Oilers gear. Check the tag and print date as with any 90s piece.

How do I date a Houston Oilers crewneck?

The derrick logo and Columbia blue held steady, so use the maker tag and the copyright year under the print. Player and event graphics help too: Warren Moon played for Houston from 1984 through 1993.

Does single stitching matter on a vintage sweatshirt?

Not much. Single-stitch hems are a T-shirt dating tell, common on tees made before the late 1990s. Sweatshirts finish the cuffs and waist with ribbed bands, so judge a crewneck by its tag, its licensing text and the copyright year on the print instead.
