Vintage 1980s Bears

jerseys.

The 1985 Bears went 15–1 and won Super Bowl XX, and their jerseys are the most famous of the decade. The design was the familiar navy or white with orange-and-white sleeve stripes and the team's rounded numbers. After George Halas died in 1983, the team wore a "GHS" patch on the chest, then put "GSH" initials on the left sleeve from 1984. Navy road pants arrived the same year.

The numbers are Walter Payton (#34, 1975–87), Jim McMahon (#9, 1982–88), William Perry (#72, from 1985), Mike Singletary (#50) and Richard Dent (#95). Champion made replica jerseys for every NFL team from the 1980s on, so its label is the one to expect on a fan jersey of the period.

Which one to buy

From Oct 3, 2026 listings

187 Bears jerseys are listed for the 80s, most asking $45–90 delivered, and Walter Payton #34 is the name on most of them, with Jim McMahon, Mike Singletary and Richard Dent from the 1985 team close behind. The period makers here are Rawlings, Sand-Knit, Champion, Wilson and Logo 7, and a GSH sleeve patch, which honours George Halas who died in 1983, dates a jersey to then or later. Ask for a tag photo, pit-to-pit (a 44 is a Medium) and close-ups of the numbers, and check whether they're sewn or screened. Red flags: Wilson Authentic Gary Fencik and Dan Hampton jerseys from the same seller at about $376 and $296, several times the band top, and titles that hedge '80s 90s' or '70s 80s', which only the tag can settle. Budget buyers should take the $31 Made in USA Rawlings Payton, first-time buyers the $66 Rawlings Payton in Medium, and collectors the $68 Sand-Knit McMahon.

NO. 03 · WHAT TO LOOK FOR
  • GSH on the sleeve: on-field jerseys carried GSH on the left sleeve from 1984. The 1983 jerseys had a GHS patch on the front instead.
  • Rounded numbers: by the 80s the Bears were the only NFL team still using rounded numerals. Block numbers on a Bears jersey are a red flag.
  • No collar shield: on-field NFL jerseys gained a small NFL shield at the bottom of the collar in 1991. A jersey styled as 80s that carries it was made in 1991 or later.
  • Starter came later: Starter's NFL replica jerseys date from 1992, so a Starter-label jersey of an 80s player is a 90s product.
  • Champion in two roles: Champion made replicas for all teams from the 1980s, but it also made the Bears' on-field jerseys from 1993 to 1996. A Champion label alone doesn't prove an 80s date.
  • Make sure the maker, the era and the design agree. A label from a company that did not make that team's gear in that period, or a design detail from a later season, means the jersey is newer or not what it claims to be.
NO. 04 · REPRODUCTIONS & BOOTLEGS
  • Mitchell & Ness has made football throwbacks since 2000. They copy classic designs closely but carry the Mitchell & Ness name on the labels, so check every tag before trusting the design.
  • Retro-style jerseys are older than you might think: the NFL launched a Throwbacks Collection at retail in 1991, with jerseys licensed to Tiedman & Company Sportswear. A throwback design is not proof the jersey dates to the era it copies.
  • Any '85-style jersey with Reebok or Nike branding is a modern throwback. Modern copies give themselves away at the collar: Reebok jerseys from 2002 to 2011 carry the "NFL Equipment" shield, and Nike jerseys from 2012 carry the redesigned shield.
  • Mitchell & Ness sells its NFL Legacy and Authentic throwbacks in numeric sizes (36 S, 40 M, 44 L, 48 XL, 52 2XL, 56 3XL), so a numeric size on its own does not prove a jersey is old.

NO. 05 · SIZING

Modern throwbacks often use numeric sizes (Mitchell & Ness: 40 M, 44 L, 48 XL), while period replicas carry their own maker's sizing, so the tag alone tells you little about fit. Ask for pit-to-pit (armpit to armpit, laid flat) and back length from collar to hem, and compare them with a jersey you own. Tagged sizes vary by maker and era, and many listings are mis-sized.

How do I tell an '85 Bears original from a throwback?

Read the labels first: Mitchell & Ness, Reebok or Nike branding means a later piece. Then check the collar for an NFL shield, which on-field jerseys only gained in 1991. A real mid-80s jersey also has rounded numbers and GSH on the left sleeve.

What does GSH mean?

George S. Halas, the Bears' founder, who died in 1983. The team wore a GHS monogram patch on the chest after his death and moved the GSH initials to the left sleeve in 1984. They are still there.

Whose jerseys are these?

Walter Payton (#34) is the anchor; he played for Chicago from 1975 to 1987. Jim McMahon (#9), William Perry (#72, a rookie in 1985), Mike Singletary (#50) and Richard Dent (#95) round out the 1985 names.

Champion or Starter?

Champion made NFL replicas from the 1980s, so a Champion Bears jersey can be a true 80s piece. Starter's NFL replicas began in 1992, so a Starter Payton or McMahon jersey was made in the 90s.
