Vintage 1980s 49ers

jerseys.

The 49ers won four Super Bowls in the 80s (XVI, XIX, XXIII and XXIV), all with Joe Montana (#16) at quarterback. They wore the 1964-style uniform: scarlet red or white jerseys with three sleeve stripes, TV numbers above the stripes, and gold pants. Small changes help date a jersey: a squarer "2" numeral from 1984, serifed player names phased in by 1986, and thinner, closer-set sleeve stripes in 1989.

The era's numbers include Ronnie Lott (#42, 1981–90), Dwight Clark (#87), Roger Craig (#33) and Jerry Rice (#80), who arrived in 1985. Champion made replica jerseys for every NFL team from the 1980s on, so its label is the one to expect on a fan jersey of the period.

From Oct 3, 2026 listings

102 49ers jerseys are listed for the 80s, most at $40–75 delivered, and almost all carry Joe Montana #16 or Jerry Rice #80, with Roger Craig, Dwight Clark and Ronnie Lott further down. Sand-Knit (Medalist and MacGregor), Rawlings, Champion, Russell and Wilson are the period makers; Sand-Knit normally carries the premium, yet here a Medalist Sand-Knit Montana sits under the band. Ask for a tag photo, pit-to-pit and close-ups of the numbers, and whether they're sewn or screened. Red flags: a Wilson Pro Line jersey at about $298, though Pro Line branding dates from the 1990s, and Steve Young jerseys sold as 80s, when Young only arrived in 1987 as Montana's backup. Budget buyers should take the $28 Champion Rice, first-time buyers the $66 Champion Montana in Large, and collectors the $42 Medalist Sand-Knit Montana in XL.

NO. 03 · WHAT TO LOOK FOR
  • Number font: in 1984 the 49ers switched to a squarer "2". Check any number with a 2 in it, like Lott's 42, against the year.
  • Player names: serifed letters for names on the back were phased in from 1984 and complete by 1986. Earlier jerseys use plain block letters.
  • 1989 sleeves: the sleeve stripes were made thinner and moved closer together in 1989.
  • The 1986 40th-anniversary patch was sewn on the pants, not the jersey, so don't expect it on a jersey.
  • No collar shield: on-field NFL jerseys gained a small NFL shield at the bottom of the collar in 1991. A jersey styled as 80s that carries it was made in 1991 or later.
  • Starter came later: Starter's NFL replica jerseys date from 1992, so a Starter-label jersey of an 80s player is a 90s product.
  • Champion made replica jerseys for every NFL team from the 1980s to 2000, so a Champion label fits an 80s fan jersey. The same label ran through the 90s, though, so check the collar and design details too.
NO. 04 · REPRODUCTIONS & BOOTLEGS
  • Mitchell & Ness has made football throwbacks since 2000. They copy classic designs closely but carry the Mitchell & Ness name on the labels, so check every tag before trusting the design.
  • Retro-style jerseys are older than you might think: the NFL launched a Throwbacks Collection at retail in 1991, with jerseys licensed to Tiedman & Company Sportswear. A throwback design is not proof the jersey dates to the era it copies.
  • In the late 2000s the 49ers wore their 80s-style scarlet uniform (the 1989 version) as an alternate, so Reebok-era copies exist. Modern copies give themselves away at the collar: Reebok jerseys from 2002 to 2011 carry the "NFL Equipment" shield, and Nike jerseys from 2012 carry the redesigned shield.
  • Mitchell & Ness sells its NFL Legacy and Authentic throwbacks in numeric sizes (36 S, 40 M, 44 L, 48 XL, 52 2XL, 56 3XL), so a numeric size on its own does not prove a jersey is old.

NO. 05 · SIZING

Modern throwbacks often use numeric sizes (Mitchell & Ness: 40 M, 44 L, 48 XL), while period replicas carry their own maker's sizing, so the tag alone tells you little about fit. Ask for pit-to-pit (armpit to armpit, laid flat) and back length from collar to hem, and compare them with a jersey you own. Tagged sizes vary by maker and era, and many listings are mis-sized.

How do I date an 80s 49ers jersey?

Look at the numerals, the name lettering and the sleeves. A squarer 2 means 1984 or later, serifed names mean the mid-80s on, and thinner, closer stripes mean 1989. No NFL shield at the collar is expected for the decade; that arrived in 1991.

Is a Montana jersey always from the 80s?

No. Montana played for San Francisco from 1979 to 1992, so a Montana jersey can be from the 80s, the early 90s or a later throwback. A Starter label (1992 on), a collar shield or Mitchell & Ness, Reebok or Nike branding marks a later piece.

Whose jerseys are these?

Joe Montana (#16) above all, then Ronnie Lott (#42), Dwight Clark (#87), Roger Craig (#33) and Jerry Rice (#80). Rice joined in 1985 and played for the 49ers through 2000, so a Rice jersey can come from either decade.

How do I tell an 80s original from a Mitchell & Ness?

Read every label. Mitchell & Ness has made football throwbacks since 2000, uses its own tags, and sells numeric sizes such as 44 for a large. A period piece should have a Champion or other era-correct label and no collar shield.
