Vintage 1980s Bears

sweatshirts.

This collection covers Chicago Bears sweatshirts made from 1980 to 1989, a decade defined by one season. Under Mike Ditka, the 1985 Bears went 15-1, losing only to Miami on Monday Night Football, then beat New England 46-10 in Super Bowl XX on January 26, 1986. With the 46 defense, Walter Payton, Jim McMahon and the Grammy-nominated "Super Bowl Shuffle," it remains the signature Bears season of the decade.

The look was navy and orange with the wishbone "C," orange with white and navy trim since 1974, and "GSH" sleeve initials for George Halas from 1984. Starter, Champion, Russell Athletic, Logo 7 and Salem Sportswear made licensed Bears fleece. Dated 1985-86 title graphics on made-in-USA tags are the ones to look for.

Which one to buy

From Oct 3, 2026 listings

27 Bears sweatshirts turn up for the 80s, most at $40–90 delivered, and the 1985 Super Bowl season dominates the graphics. Made-in-USA Champion, Garan, Logo 7 and puffy-print 50/50 crewnecks are the era-correct finds; a title that says "80s 90s" is hedging on the date, so ask for a tag photo and pit-to-pit and length. Watch the condition words: one 1985 piece has been cropped, one is sold as distressed, and the $508 1985 roster crewneck is nearly eight times the typical price. Seller feedback wasn't captured, so check it on each item page. Value hunters should take the $33 Made-in-USA Champion, first-time buyers the $59 1989 Division Champions crewneck, and collectors the $78 navy Champion raglan.

NO. 03 · WHAT TO LOOK FOR
  • Super Bowl XX champions graphics belong to the 1985 season. The game was played on January 26, 1986, so a copyright year of 1985 or 1986 fits.
  • Jersey-style graphics with "GSH" on the sleeve match the real uniforms from the 1984 season on; the initials honored Halas after his death in 1983.
  • Maker tags of the decade: Starter (an NFL licensee by 1983), Champion, Russell Athletic, Logo 7, Salem Sportswear (its NFL license followed in the later 80s) and Nutmeg Mills. Dealer guides place most Logo 7, Salem and Nutmeg pieces in the late 80s.
  • Champion's 1980s tag is the tricolor label, made in USA, often with a 90/10 cotton-acrylic or 89/8/3 cotton-acrylic-rayon content tag and the "C" logo on the sleeve. Reverse Weave crews add side panels, part of the construction Champion patented to fight shrinkage.
  • A copyright year under the graphic and licensing text such as "Officially Licensed NFL Product" or an NFL Properties mark. NFL Properties, the league's licensing arm since 1963, licensed many makers at once in this era, so a wide range of tags is normal.
  • A Made in USA tag. US-made fleece was the norm for licensed 80s crewnecks (Champion's 80s tags all read Made in USA), so a foreign-made tag on a supposed 80s piece needs a closer look.
NO. 04 · REPRODUCTIONS & BOOTLEGS
  • Licensed retro lines such as Mitchell & Ness (NFL throwbacks since about 2000, owned by Fanatics since 2022), Homage and Junk Food reprint 1985 Bears designs on new blanks. Their own brand tags give them away, and Homage names designs by year (a '93 crewneck, for example), so a year in a listing title proves nothing.
  • Not every 80s-looking graphic is from the 80s. The NFL's Throwbacks retail collection began in 1991, with Nutmeg Mills making the sweatshirts, so a 90s tag on a vintage-style design is a period retro piece, not an 80s original.
  • A Reebok tag dates NFL gear to 2002-2012, when Reebok held the league's exclusive uniform, sideline and cap license. A Nike tag is later still, since Nike took over the league's uniform contract in 2012.
  • Super Bowl Shuffle and 46-10 scoreline designs are reprinted often. Check that the tag, the content label and the copyright year all point to the mid-80s.
  • Dealers list the same red flags again and again: wrong neck tags for the era, missing licensing text, a copyright year that doesn't match the tag, and artificial distressing. A cut-out tag removes the best evidence, so price that piece as unverified.

NO. 05 · SIZING

Sizing on 70s and 80s fleece runs differently from today, and decades of washing can shrink cotton-rich blends, so the tag size is only a starting point. Ask the seller for pit-to-pit and top-to-bottom length in inches and compare them with a sweatshirt that fits you. Raglan-sleeve crews also fit differently through the shoulders than set-in sleeves, so check sleeve length too.

NO. 08 · FIELD NOTES

How do I check a Super Bowl XX crewneck is period-made?

The Bears beat New England 46-10 on January 26, 1986, to finish the 1985 season. An original should show an 80s maker tag, licensing text and a copyright year of 1985 or 1986. A modern retro brand tag, a Reebok or Nike tag, or a non-US country of origin points to a later piece.

Can the Bears logo date an 80s sweatshirt?

Not by itself. The orange wishbone C has been unchanged since 1974. Use the tag, the copyright year and the event in the graphic, such as the 1985 season or the GSH sleeve initials added in 1984.

Does single stitching matter on an 80s sweatshirt?

Not much. Single-stitch hems are a T-shirt dating tell, common on tees made before the late 1990s. Sweatshirts finish the cuffs and waist with ribbed bands, so judge a crewneck by its tag, its licensing text and the copyright year on the print instead.

Is a Champion Bears crewneck from the 80s?

It can be. Champion made uniforms and retail pieces for some NFL teams from the 1970s into the 1990s. An 80s Champion should have the tricolor tag, made in USA, and a content label to match; embroidered tags point to the 90s.
