Vintage 1980s Raiders

sweatshirts.

This collection covers Raiders sweatshirts made from 1980 to 1989. The decade began in Oakland, where the Raiders won Super Bowl XV after the 1980 season as the first wild card team to take the title. They moved to Los Angeles for 1982 and won Super Bowl XVIII after the 1983 season. The LA teams featured Marcus Allen, Howie Long, Mike Haynes and, from 1987, Bo Jackson.

Silver and black and the shield logo date to 1963. In LA they became a street-style staple worn by N.W.A. Starter, Champion, Russell Athletic, Logo 7 and Salem Sportswear made licensed Raiders fleece. Los Angeles crewnecks on made-in-USA tags are the classic pick.

Which one to buy

From Oct 3, 2026 listings

49 Raiders sweatshirts come up for the 80s, most at $50–160 delivered, a wide band because Nike and Champion pieces pull the top up. The team played in Los Angeles from 1982 to 1994, so most 80s pieces say Los Angeles; an "Oakland" piece dated after 1981 is an era mismatch worth questioning, and an "80's 90's" title is hedging, so ask for a tag photo. Nike's LA skyline crewneck is the standout graphic: a clean Medium asks $157 delivered, while a distressed one asks $360. Seller feedback wasn't captured, so check it on each item page. Budget buyers should take the $37 Made-in-USA Small (after checking pit-to-pit), first-time buyers the Large Champion World Champs crewneck, and collectors the clean Nike skyline.

NO. 03 · WHAT TO LOOK FOR
  • Read the city. In this decade, "Oakland" pieces date to 1980-81 and "Los Angeles" pieces to 1982 on (the team stayed in LA through 1994).
  • Super Bowl XV champions graphics should say Oakland (1980 season); Super Bowl XVIII graphics should say Los Angeles (1983 season).
  • The shield logo and silver and black have barely changed since 1963, so the city and the tag do the dating.
  • Maker tags of the decade: Starter (an NFL licensee by 1983), Champion, Russell Athletic, Logo 7, Salem Sportswear (its NFL license followed in the later 80s) and Nutmeg Mills. Dealer guides place most Logo 7, Salem and Nutmeg pieces in the late 80s.
  • Champion's 1980s tag is the tricolor label, made in USA, often with a 90/10 cotton-acrylic or 89/8/3 cotton-acrylic-rayon content tag and the "C" logo on the sleeve. Reverse Weave crews add side panels, part of the construction Champion patented to fight shrinkage.
  • A copyright year under the graphic and licensing text such as "Officially Licensed NFL Product" or an NFL Properties mark. NFL Properties, the league's licensing arm since 1963, licensed many makers at once in this era, so a wide range of tags is normal.
NO. 04 · REPRODUCTIONS & BOOTLEGS
  • Licensed retro lines such as Mitchell & Ness (NFL throwbacks since about 2000, owned by Fanatics since 2022), Homage and Junk Food reprint LA Raiders logos on new blanks. Their own brand tags give them away, and Homage names designs by year (a '93 crewneck, for example), so a year in a listing title proves nothing.
  • Not every 80s-looking graphic is from the 80s. The NFL's Throwbacks retail collection began in 1991, with Nutmeg Mills making the sweatshirts, so a 90s tag on a vintage-style design is a period retro piece, not an 80s original.
  • A Los Angeles Raiders piece can also be from 1990-94, when the team was still in LA. Check the tag and copyright year before calling it 80s.
  • A Reebok tag dates NFL gear to 2002-2012, when Reebok held the league's exclusive uniform, sideline and cap license. A Nike tag is later still, since Nike took over the league's uniform contract in 2012.
  • Dealers list the same red flags again and again: wrong neck tags for the era, missing licensing text, a copyright year that doesn't match the tag, and artificial distressing. A cut-out tag removes the best evidence, so price that piece as unverified.

NO. 05 · SIZING

Sizing on 70s and 80s fleece runs differently from today, and decades of washing can shrink cotton-rich blends, so the tag size is only a starting point. Ask the seller for pit-to-pit and top-to-bottom length in inches and compare them with a sweatshirt that fits you. Raglan-sleeve crews also fit differently through the shoulders than set-in sleeves, so check sleeve length too.

NO. 08 · FIELD NOTES

Is a Los Angeles Raiders sweatshirt automatically from the 80s?

No. The Raiders played in Los Angeles from 1982 through the 1994 season, so LA gear spans both decades. The maker tag, made in USA and the copyright year under the graphic narrow it down.

Which Super Bowls did the Raiders win in the 80s?

Two: Super Bowl XV after the 1980 season, while still in Oakland, and Super Bowl XVIII after the 1983 season, in Los Angeles. Marcus Allen's 74-yard touchdown run was a highlight of XVIII.

Does single stitching matter on a vintage sweatshirt?

Not much. Single-stitch hems are a T-shirt dating tell, common on tees made before the late 1990s. Sweatshirts finish the cuffs and waist with ribbed bands, so judge a crewneck by its tag, its licensing text and the copyright year on the print instead.

Why do LA Raiders pieces sell beyond football fans?

The Los Angeles years tied silver and black to hip-hop, with N.W.A wearing Raiders gear and Chuck D wearing Raiders colors on a Public Enemy album cover. ESPN's 30 for 30 film Straight Outta L.A. covers that era.
