Vintage 1980s 49ers

sweatshirts.

This collection covers San Francisco 49ers sweatshirts made from 1980 to 1989, the Bill Walsh and Joe Montana decade. The 49ers won Super Bowl XVI after the 1981 season, Super Bowl XIX after a 15-1 season in 1984, and Super Bowl XXIII over Cincinnati after the 1988 season, Walsh's last game. Under George Seifert they added Super Bowl XXIV after the 1989 season, a 55-10 win over Denver.

The look was scarlet red and 49ers gold with the intertwined "SF" in a red oval, a logo the team has used since 1962. Starter, Champion, Russell Athletic, Logo 7 and Salem Sportswear made licensed 49ers fleece. Title-year crewnecks on made-in-USA tags are the core of this market.

Which one to buy

From Oct 3, 2026 listings

63 49ers sweatshirts come up for the 80s, most at $50–85 delivered, and the graphics are mostly dated championship pieces: Super Bowl XIX (1984 season), Super Bowl XXIII (1988 season) and the back-to-back titles of 1988–89. Period makers here include Logo 7, Signal, Russell Athletic, Champion, Trench and Starter; a dated graphic plus one of those tags is the best sign of a genuine 80s piece, and "Made in USA" fits. Ask for a tag photo on generic titles such as "80's San Francisco 49ers Football Sweatshirt", which one seller repeats across many teams, and check "faded" or "distressed" wording before paying band price. Seller feedback wasn't captured, so check it on each item page. Budget buyers should take the $40 back-to-back champions XL, first-time buyers the $70 Logo 7 Super Bowl XXIII crewneck, and collectors the Super Bowl XIX Signal piece.

NO. 03 · WHAT TO LOOK FOR
  • Super Bowl champions graphics should match a title season: XVI (1981), XIX (1984), XXIII (1988) or XXIV (1989).
  • Late-decade logo detail: black outlining was added to the "SF" on the helmet in 1989. Pieces without it fit the earlier look.
  • 40th anniversary graphics belong to 1986, when the team wore a 40th anniversary patch.
  • Maker tags of the decade: Starter (an NFL licensee by 1983), Champion, Russell Athletic, Logo 7, Salem Sportswear (its NFL license followed in the later 80s) and Nutmeg Mills. Dealer guides place most Logo 7, Salem and Nutmeg pieces in the late 80s.
  • Champion's 1980s tag is the tricolor label, made in USA, often with a 90/10 cotton-acrylic or 89/8/3 cotton-acrylic-rayon content tag and the "C" logo on the sleeve. Reverse Weave crews add side panels, part of the construction Champion patented to fight shrinkage.
  • A copyright year under the graphic and licensing text such as "Officially Licensed NFL Product" or an NFL Properties mark. NFL Properties, the league's licensing arm since 1963, licensed many makers at once in this era, so a wide range of tags is normal.
NO. 04 · REPRODUCTIONS & BOOTLEGS
  • Licensed retro lines such as Mitchell & Ness (NFL throwbacks since about 2000, owned by Fanatics since 2022), Homage and Junk Food reprint Montana-era 49ers designs on new blanks. Their own brand tags give them away, and Homage names designs by year (a '93 crewneck, for example), so a year in a listing title proves nothing.
  • The 49ers brought back 1980s-style uniforms as alternates from 2008 and made a close update of them their main look in 2009, so modern gear can look very 80s. Check the tag, not just the colors.
  • Not every 80s-looking graphic is from the 80s. The NFL's Throwbacks retail collection began in 1991, with Nutmeg Mills making the sweatshirts, so a 90s tag on a vintage-style design is a period retro piece, not an 80s original.
  • A Reebok tag dates NFL gear to 2002-2012, when Reebok held the league's exclusive uniform, sideline and cap license. A Nike tag is later still, since Nike took over the league's uniform contract in 2012.
  • Dealers list the same red flags again and again: wrong neck tags for the era, missing licensing text, a copyright year that doesn't match the tag, and artificial distressing. A cut-out tag removes the best evidence, so price that piece as unverified.

NO. 05 · SIZING

Sizing on 70s and 80s fleece runs differently from today, and decades of washing can shrink cotton-rich blends, so the tag size is only a starting point. Ask the seller for pit-to-pit and top-to-bottom length in inches and compare them with a sweatshirt that fits you. Raglan-sleeve crews also fit differently through the shoulders than set-in sleeves, so check sleeve length too.

NO. 08 · FIELD NOTES

Which Super Bowls did the 49ers win in the 80s?

Four: XVI (1981 season), XIX (1984 season), XXIII (1988 season) and XXIV (1989 season). Super Bowl XXIV was played in early 1990, so its champions gear can carry a 1990 date and still belong to this decade's run.

How do I check a 49ers Super Bowl crewneck is period-made?

Match the Super Bowl number to the season, then look for an 80s maker tag, made in USA, licensing text and a copyright year close to the game. A modern retro brand tag or a Reebok or Nike tag means it was made later.

Does single stitching matter on a vintage sweatshirt?

Not much. Single-stitch hems are a T-shirt dating tell, common on tees made before the late 1990s. Sweatshirts finish the cuffs and waist with ribbed bands, so judge a crewneck by its tag, its licensing text and the copyright year on the print instead.

Is the 49ers logo different on 80s pieces?

Only slightly. The SF oval dates to 1962; in 1989 black outlining was added to the SF on the helmet, and in 1996 the logo was redrawn with gold trim. An 80s piece should show the pre-1996 oval.
