Vintage 1990s Bills

sweatshirts.

This collection covers Buffalo Bills sweatshirts made from 1990 to 1999. Under Marv Levy, with Jim Kelly, Thurman Thomas, Bruce Smith and Darryl Talley, the Bills won four straight AFC titles from 1990 to 1993 and reached four straight Super Bowls, losing all four. That run produced a lot of AFC champions fleece.

The look was royal blue, red and white, with the charging bison logo designed in 1974 and red helmets worn since 1984. The bigger change came later, in 2002, when navy and nickel gray arrived. Logo 7, Starter, Salem Sportswear, Nutmeg Mills and Pro Player made licensed Bills crewnecks. Period tags and early-90s AFC title graphics are the pieces to look for.

NO. 01 · BUYING GUIDE

Which one to buy

From Oct 3, 2026 listings

31 Bills sweatshirts are listed, thinner than most teams, and most ask $65–120 delivered, a higher band than the Cowboys or Steelers. The four straight AFC title years supply the collectible graphics (AFC champions and Super Bowl matchup crewnecks), so prioritise one of those on a period tag (Trench, Logo 7, Salem, Nutmeg, Champion) with a stated size, and ask for pit-to-pit and length. Seller feedback wasn't captured for these listings, so check it on each item page. Red flags: a $209 Cornelius Bennett piece at twice the median, and a 1993 Super Bowl XXVII champions sweatshirt that most likely celebrates the Cowboys' win over Buffalo. Budget buyers should take the $78 Trench in Large, everyday wearers the $81 embroidered Logo 7 XL, and collectors the $100 1991 AFC crewneck.

NO. 03 · WHAT TO LOOK FOR
  • Royal blue, red and white with the charging bison is the 90s look. Navy and nickel gray belong to the 2002 redesign and later.
  • AFC champions graphics should match the 1990, 1991, 1992 or 1993 seasons, the four straight conference titles.
  • Super Bowl graphics from the run name Super Bowl XXV through XXVIII. Buffalo lost XXV to the Giants and XXVII and XXVIII to Dallas.
  • Maker tags of the decade: Logo 7 (renamed Logo Athletic in 1997), Starter, Salem Sportswear, Nutmeg Mills and its Lee Sport label (from 1995), Russell Athletic and Pro Player.
  • Tag history narrows the date: Salem was sold to Fruit of the Loom in 1993 and folded into Pro Player, Russell ended its pro football licensing in 1997, and Logo Athletic and Starter were both bankrupt by about 1999.
  • A copyright year printed under the graphic (for example, © 1994) plus licensing text such as "Officially Licensed NFL Product" or an NFL Properties mark. The year should agree with the tag and the construction.
  • A Made in USA tag. Big makers moved sewing to Mexico and the Caribbean during the 90s, so a US-made tag supports an earlier date, while a Latin American tag usually points later in the decade.
NO. 04 · REPRODUCTIONS & BOOTLEGS
  • Licensed retro lines such as Mitchell & Ness (NFL throwbacks since about 2000, owned by Fanatics since 2022), Homage and Junk Food reprint old Bills logos on new blanks. Their own brand tags give them away, and Homage names designs by year (a '93 crewneck, for example), so a year in a listing title proves nothing.
  • Since 2011 the Bills have worn an updated version of their 1975-83 look with royal blue, so modern Bills gear can look a lot like 90s pieces. The tag and copyright year matter more than the colors.
  • A Reebok tag dates NFL gear to 2002-2012, when Reebok held the league's exclusive uniform, sideline and cap license. A Nike tag is later still, since Nike took over the league's uniform contract in 2012.
  • A familiar label is not automatic proof. Starter is still an active NFL licensee and the Nutmeg Mills name has been revived for vintage-style graphics, so check that the tag design, fabric and country of origin fit the period, not just the brand name.
  • Dealers list the same red flags again and again: wrong neck tags for the era, missing licensing text, a copyright year that doesn't match the tag, and artificial distressing. A cut-out tag removes the best evidence, so price that piece as unverified.

NO. 05 · SIZING

Tagged sizes from the 90s don't line up neatly with modern sizing, and cotton-rich fleece shrinks in hot washes, which is why Champion patented its shrink-resisting Reverse Weave cut. Ask the seller for pit-to-pit and top-to-bottom length in inches and compare them with a sweatshirt you already own. A stretched waistband or blown-out cuffs will make it fit looser than the numbers suggest.

NO. 08 · FIELD NOTES

Did the Bills ever change their logo in the 90s?

No. The charging bison from 1974 ran through the decade, and even the 2002 redesign kept it after fans rejected a proposed new logo. What changed in 2002 were the colors: navy and nickel gray joined the scheme.

Are AFC champions sweatshirts from the Super Bowl years common?

Yes. Buffalo won the AFC four years running, from the 1990 to the 1993 season, so title fleece from that span turns up regularly. Check that the year on the graphic matches one of those seasons and that the tag is a 90s licensee.

Does single stitching matter on a vintage sweatshirt?

Not much. Single-stitch hems are a T-shirt dating tell, common on tees made before the late 1990s. Sweatshirts finish the cuffs and waist with ribbed bands, so judge a crewneck by its tag, its licensing text and the copyright year on the print instead.

How do I check a Bills Super Bowl crewneck is period-made?

Match the Super Bowl number to the season (XXV through XXVIII), then confirm a 90s maker tag, licensing text and a copyright year close to that game. A modern retro brand, a Reebok tag or a recent country of origin points to a reissue.
