Vintage 1990s Bills

jerseys.

Four straight Super Bowl trips, XXV through XXVIII, made the early-90s Bills one of the decade's best-known teams. They wore royal blue home jerseys and white road jerseys with striped sleeves, under the red helmet (adopted in 1984) with the charging-buffalo logo. The darker navy uniforms with red side panels did not arrive until 2002.

The core numbers are Jim Kelly (#12), Thurman Thomas (#34), Bruce Smith (#78) and Andre Reed (#83). Champion made the on-field jerseys from 1990 to 1996, then Wilson in 1997, Logo Athletic in 1998 and Puma in 1999, per the Gridiron Uniform Database. Champion and Starter also made fan replicas.

Which one to buy

From Oct 3, 2026 listings

107 Bills jerseys are listed for the 90s, and most ask $45–80 delivered. Jim Kelly #12 and Thurman Thomas #34 from the four-Super-Bowl run are the names that matter; Champion, Starter, Logo 7, Logo Athletic and Wilson replicas are common, while Russell, Starter and Wilson Authentics (sewn numbers, numeric size such as 48 or 52) ask about $100–260. Ask every seller for a tag photo, pit-to-pit and close-ups of the numbers, which crack and peel on screen-printed replicas. Red flags: a Champion 'Pro Cut Style' Andre Reed at about $284, more than three times the band top, and a Logo Athletic Flutie whose title is copied word for word by a second seller. Budget buyers should take the $39 Champion Thurman Thomas, first-time buyers the $54 Champion Kelly in Medium, and collectors the Russell Authentic Kelly at about $101.

NO. 03 · WHAT TO LOOK FOR
  • Champion is the on-field brand: Champion made the Bills' game jerseys from 1990 to 1996, and a Champion-made 1994 Jim Kelly game jersey is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. A Champion Bills jersey can be a replica or a closer-to-authentic piece, so ask for photos of the number application and every tag.
  • No navy, no side panels: the 2002 redesign brought darker navy, nickel gray accents and red side panels. A Bills jersey with those is 2002 or later.
  • Super Bowl XXV patch: both teams wore the game-logo patch on the left shoulder in January 1991, the first Super Bowl to do so. The Bills wore white in that game.
  • Late-90s makers: Wilson (1997), Logo Athletic (1998) and Puma (1999) labels fit the on-field jerseys of those seasons.
  • 1994 throwback: the Bills wore 1960s-style throwbacks with red helmets in 1994, and all 1994 jerseys carried the diamond 75th Anniversary patch.
  • NFL shield at the collar: on-field jerseys gained a small NFL shield at the bottom of the collar in 1991, so its presence or absence helps date a piece to before or after that season.
NO. 04 · REPRODUCTIONS & BOOTLEGS
  • Mitchell & Ness has made football throwbacks since 2000. They copy classic designs closely but carry the Mitchell & Ness name on the labels, so check every tag before trusting the design.
  • Since 2011 the Bills have worn a royal blue design modeled on their 1975–83 look. Modern Nike versions resemble 90s jerseys; check the labels and the NFL shield design used since 2012.
  • The standing-buffalo throwback first worn in 2005 copies the mid-1960s uniform. It is a later design, not a 90s game jersey.
  • Mitchell & Ness sells its NFL Legacy and Authentic throwbacks in numeric sizes (36 S, 40 M, 44 L, 48 XL, 52 2XL, 56 3XL), so a numeric size on its own does not prove a jersey is old.

NO. 05 · SIZING

Tag sizes can differ between makers such as Champion, Starter and the on-field suppliers, so treat the tag as a starting point. Ask for pit-to-pit (armpit to armpit, laid flat) and back length from collar to hem, and compare them with a jersey you own. Tagged sizes vary by maker and era, and many listings are mis-sized.

NO. 08 · FIELD NOTES

Is a Champion Bills jersey a replica or the real thing?

It could be either. Champion made the Bills' on-field jerseys from 1990 to 1996 and also made replicas for every NFL team into 2000. Number application, fabric and the tags separate the two, so ask for close-ups before paying an authentic price.

Which Super Bowl patches should I expect?

Super Bowl XXV (January 1991) was the first game where both teams wore a game-logo patch, on the left shoulder. The practice did not become standard until Super Bowl XXXII, so don't assume every Bills Super Bowl jersey had one.

How do I tell a 90s Bills jersey from a 2011-or-later one?

The colors are close, so check the maker and the collar. 90s jerseys carry Champion, Wilson, Logo Athletic, Puma or Starter labels and the original NFL shield. Since 2012 the jerseys are Nike with a redesigned shield.

How do I tell a 90s original from a Mitchell & Ness?

Read every label. Mitchell & Ness has made football throwbacks since 2000 and puts its own name on the tags, and it sells them in numeric sizes (44 is a large), so a numeric size is not a sign of age. Then check the details against the year the jersey claims to be from: the collar shield, any patches and the design changes listed above.
