Vintage 1990s Cowboys

jerseys.

The 90s Cowboys won Super Bowls XXVII, XXVIII and XXX, and their jerseys were everywhere. Through 1994 the navy road jersey had gray numbers with white borders and a blue pinstripe. In 1996 it was redesigned with white/gray/white sleeve stripes carrying a star, white numbers and a "Cowboys" wordmark at the neckline. The white home jersey wore that wordmark from 1996 to 1998, and the white "Double-Star" alternate debuted on Thanksgiving 1994.

The era's stars were Troy Aikman (#8), Emmitt Smith (#22) and Michael Irvin (#88), joined by Deion Sanders (#21) in 1995. On the field Dallas wore Russell through 1992, Apex in 1993 and 1994, and Nike from 1996, per the Gridiron Uniform Database. Champion and Starter made the retail replicas.

Which one to buy

From Oct 3, 2026 listings

846 Cowboys jerseys are listed for the 90s, the deepest pool of any team, and most sell for $30–60 delivered. Aikman, Emmitt Smith and Irvin replicas from Logo Athletic, Logo 7, Starter, Champion, Wilson and Apex One are everywhere, so don't pay above the band for a common replica; the premium belongs to Pro Line Authentics (sewn numbers, numeric size such as 48 or 52) and genuine deadstock. Ask every seller for a tag photo, pit-to-pit and close-ups of the numbers, which crack and peel on screen-printed replicas. Red flags: a NOS Logo 7 Aikman at about $213 delivered, more than three times the band top, two listings whose seller feedback wasn't captured, and a 0% feedback seller asking about $149 for an Aikman elsewhere in the results. Budget buyers should take the $24 Logo Athletic Emmitt in XL, first-time buyers the Made in USA Logo 7 Aikman in Medium, and collectors the $45 Starter Authentic Aikman.

NO. 03 · WHAT TO LOOK FOR
  • Navy jersey numbers: through 1994 the navy jersey had gray numbers with white borders and a blue pinstripe. From 1996 the numbers are white, the sleeves carry white/gray/white stripes with a star, and a "Cowboys" wordmark sits at the neckline.
  • White jersey wordmark: the "Cowboys" wordmark at the neckline of the white jersey was used only from 1996 to 1998, a quick way to date a white home jersey.
  • Double-Star alternate: the white Double-Star jersey (blue sleeves, a star on each shoulder) debuted on Thanksgiving 1994 and was worn through those playoffs. A navy version appeared in two 1995 games.
  • On-field makers: Russell through 1992, Apex in 1993–94 and Nike from 1996 to 1999. Champion made replica jerseys for every NFL team from the 1980s until 2000, and Starter made replicas for all teams from 1992 to 1998. These retail replicas are the most common 90s jerseys you will find.
  • 1994 75th-anniversary patch: every team wore a diamond-shaped NFL 75th Anniversary patch that season, and most wore throwback uniforms in selected games. A jersey with that patch is a 1994 piece.
  • NFL shield at the collar: on-field jerseys gained a small NFL shield at the bottom of the collar in 1991, so its presence or absence helps date a piece to before or after that season.
  • Make sure the maker, the era and the design agree. A label from a company that did not make that team's gear in that period, or a design detail from a later season, means the jersey is newer or not what it claims to be.
NO. 04 · REPRODUCTIONS & BOOTLEGS
  • Mitchell & Ness has made football throwbacks since 2000. They copy classic designs closely but carry the Mitchell & Ness name on the labels, so check every tag before trusting the design.
  • The Double-Star design came back in 2015 as the Cowboys' Color Rush uniform, so modern Nike versions exist. Those carry Nike labels and the redesigned NFL shield used since 2012.
  • From 2004 the Cowboys wore a navy version of their 1960–63 uniform as a Thanksgiving alternate, so navy throwback-style jerseys are 2000s or later.
  • Mitchell & Ness sells its NFL Legacy and Authentic throwbacks in numeric sizes (36 S, 40 M, 44 L, 48 XL, 52 2XL, 56 3XL), so a numeric size on its own does not prove a jersey is old.

NO. 05 · SIZING

Tag sizes can differ between makers such as Champion, Starter and the on-field suppliers, so treat the tag as a starting point. Ask for pit-to-pit (armpit to armpit, laid flat) and back length from collar to hem, and compare them with a jersey you own. Tagged sizes vary by maker and era, and many listings are mis-sized.

NO. 08 · FIELD NOTES

Champion, Starter or an on-field brand: what's the difference?

Champion and Starter made the retail replicas most fans bought: Champion for every team into 2000, Starter from 1992 to 1998. The on-field uniforms came from the team's supplier, which for Dallas was Russell through 1992, Apex in 1993–94 and Nike from 1996. A jersey from the on-field supplier is the closer match to what players wore, but ask for tag and number close-ups before assuming it is a pro-cut authentic.

How do I tell a 90s original from a Mitchell & Ness?

Read every label. Mitchell & Ness has made football throwbacks since 2000 and puts its own name on the tags, and it sells them in numeric sizes (44 is a large), so a numeric size is not a sign of age. Then check the details against the year the jersey claims to be from: the collar shield, any patches and the design changes listed above.

How do I date a 90s Cowboys jersey by its design?

Gray numbers with a white border on the navy jersey point to 1994 or earlier. White numbers, starred sleeve stripes and a neckline wordmark on the navy jersey mean 1996 or later, and the wordmark on a white jersey narrows it to 1996–98. A diamond 75th-anniversary patch or a Double-Star design places it in 1994–95.

Whose jerseys are these most likely to be?

The dynasty core: Aikman (#8, 1989–2000), Emmitt Smith (#22, 1990–2002) and Irvin (#88, 1988–99), plus Deion Sanders (#21) from 1995. Aikman and Smith played the whole decade, so use the uniform details and the maker's label to pin down the year rather than the name.
