Vintage 1990s 49ers

jerseys.

The 90s 49ers handed the offense from Joe Montana to Steve Young and won Super Bowl XXIX after the 1994 season. Through 1995 they wore the scarlet 1964-style jersey with three sleeve stripes, serifed block numbers and TV numbers above the stripes. In 1994 they adopted a 1955-style throwback with shadowed numbers and wore it all the way through the Super Bowl. In 1996 came a deeper cardinal red, black-shadowed numbers with gold trim and TV numbers moved to the shoulders.

Steve Young (#8) and Jerry Rice (#80) are the defining numbers, with Deion Sanders (#21) in 1994. On the field the team wore Wilson from 1990 to 1995, Reebok from 1996 to 1998 and Adidas in 1999, per the Gridiron Uniform Database. Champion and Starter made the retail replicas.

Which one to buy

From Oct 3, 2026 listings

281 49ers jerseys are listed for the 90s, most at $40–85 delivered, and Jerry Rice and Steve Young are the names that carry the price. Champion, Starter and Logo Athletic replicas are the everyday buys, while Pro Line Authentics and true deadstock start around $100. Ask for a tag photo with the numeric size (44 = M, 48 = L, 52 = XL) and close-ups of the numbers, which crack on screen-printed replicas. Red flags: a deadstock Steve Young at about $267, three times the band top, two listings from sellers whose feedback wasn't captured, and black 'jersey shirts', which aren't 49ers game-style jerseys. Budget buyers should take the $33 Logo Athletic Rice, first-time buyers the $36 Champion Young in 48, and collectors the $58 adidas Authentic blank.

NO. 03 · WHAT TO LOOK FOR
  • Red shade and numbers: scarlet red with plain serifed block numbers means 1995 or earlier. The darker cardinal red with black drop shadows and gold trim on the numbers arrived in 1996.
  • 1994 throwback: the 1955-style jersey has sans-serif block numbers with black outlines and drop shadows and no TV numbers. The team wore it from week 3 of 1994 through Super Bowl XXIX.
  • TV numbers: above the sleeve stripes through 1995, on top of the shoulders from 1996.
  • 1996 patch: a 50th-anniversary patch based on the team's old shield-crest logo was worn in 1996.
  • On-field makers: Wilson (1990–95), Reebok (1996–98) and Adidas (1999). Reebok on a 49ers jersey is not automatically 2000s; it was the team supplier for three late-90s seasons.
  • NFL shield at the collar: on-field jerseys gained a small NFL shield at the bottom of the collar in 1991, so its presence or absence helps date a piece to before or after that season.
  • 1994 75th-anniversary patch: every team wore a diamond-shaped NFL 75th Anniversary patch that season, and most wore throwback uniforms in selected games. A jersey with that patch is a 1994 piece.
NO. 04 · REPRODUCTIONS & BOOTLEGS
  • Mitchell & Ness has made football throwbacks since 2000. They copy classic designs closely but carry the Mitchell & Ness name on the labels, so check every tag before trusting the design.
  • The 49ers brought the 1994 white throwback back in 2019 and the red one in 2021, so modern Nike versions of both exist. Look for Nike labels and the NFL shield design used since 2012.
  • In the late 2000s the team wore its 1980s-style scarlet uniform as an alternate, so Reebok-era jerseys in the old style exist too. Reebok-era pieces carry the "NFL Equipment" collar shield introduced in 2002.
  • Mitchell & Ness sells its NFL Legacy and Authentic throwbacks in numeric sizes (36 S, 40 M, 44 L, 48 XL, 52 2XL, 56 3XL), so a numeric size on its own does not prove a jersey is old.

NO. 05 · SIZING

Tag sizes can differ between makers such as Champion, Starter and the on-field suppliers, so treat the tag as a starting point. Ask for pit-to-pit (armpit to armpit, laid flat) and back length from collar to hem, and compare them with a jersey you own. Tagged sizes vary by maker and era, and many listings are mis-sized.

NO. 08 · FIELD NOTES

Is my red 49ers jersey from before or after 1996?

Check the red and the numbers. Bright scarlet with plain block numbers and TV numbers on the sleeves is 1995 or earlier. Darker cardinal red, black-shadowed numbers with gold trim and TV numbers on the shoulders mean 1996 or later.

What makes the 1994 throwback different?

It copies the 1955 jersey: sans-serif numbers with black outlines and drop shadows, and no TV numbers. The 49ers went 15–1 in it, including the playoffs, and wore it through Super Bowl XXIX. Every 1994 jersey also carried the diamond-shaped NFL 75th Anniversary patch.

Wilson, Reebok, Adidas or Champion: which is right?

All can be. Wilson made the on-field jerseys from 1990 to 1995, Reebok from 1996 to 1998 and Adidas in 1999. Champion (through 2000) and Starter (1992–98) made the retail replicas most fans bought. What matters is that the maker fits the design's year.

How do I tell a 90s original from a Mitchell & Ness?

Read every label. Mitchell & Ness has made football throwbacks since 2000 and puts its own name on the tags, and it sells them in numeric sizes (44 is a large), so a numeric size is not a sign of age. Then check the details against the year the jersey claims to be from: the collar shield, any patches and the design changes listed above.
