Vintage 1990s 49ers

sweatshirts.

This collection covers San Francisco 49ers sweatshirts made from 1990 to 1999, the Steve Young and Jerry Rice years. The decade opened with a Super Bowl XXIV win over Denver after the 1989 season, and the 49ers won again in Super Bowl XXIX after the 1994 season, a year they wore 1955-style throwbacks.

The intertwined "SF" in a red oval dates to 1962, with black outlining on the letters added in 1989. For the team's 50th season in 1996 the 49ers moved from bright scarlet to a deeper cardinal red and updated the oval with gold trim. Logo 7, Starter, Salem Sportswear, Nutmeg Mills and Russell Athletic all made licensed crewnecks. Originals with a period tag and a dated title graphic are the ones to want.

Which one to buy

From Oct 3, 2026 listings

61 49ers sweatshirts are listed, most at $45–80 delivered, and the Young-and-Rice years are well covered by Logo 7, Nutmeg, Salem, Starter and Galt Sand tags. Prioritise a named maker, a dated graphic and a stated size, and ask for a tag photo, pit-to-pit and length before you buy. Seller feedback wasn't captured for these listings, so check it on each item page. Red flags: a Salem wraparound at about $249 delivered, over three times the top of the band, and a generic '90's San Francisco 49ers Football Sweatshirt' title repeated across many listings, which tells you nothing until you see the tag. Budget buyers should take the $43 Lee Sport/Nutmeg XXL, everyday wearers the $60 1990 crewneck in XL, and collectors the $65 Super Bowl XXIV piece.

NO. 03 · WHAT TO LOOK FOR
  • The 1996 redesign is the main dating line. Bright scarlet red and the older oval point to 1995 or earlier; deeper cardinal red and the stretched, gold-trimmed oval point to 1996 or later.
  • Super Bowl champions graphics should match the 1989 season (Super Bowl XXIV) or the 1994 season (Super Bowl XXIX).
  • 50th anniversary graphics belong to 1996, when the team wore a commemorative patch based on its old shield-crest logo.
  • Maker tags of the decade: Logo 7 (renamed Logo Athletic in 1997), Starter, Salem Sportswear, Nutmeg Mills and its Lee Sport label (from 1995), Russell Athletic and Pro Player.
  • Tag history narrows the date: Salem was sold to Fruit of the Loom in 1993 and folded into Pro Player, Russell ended its pro football licensing in 1997, and Logo Athletic and Starter were both bankrupt by about 1999.
  • A copyright year printed under the graphic (for example, © 1994) plus licensing text such as "Officially Licensed NFL Product" or an NFL Properties mark. The year should agree with the tag and the construction.
  • A Made in USA tag. Big makers moved sewing to Mexico and the Caribbean during the 90s, so a US-made tag supports an earlier date, while a Latin American tag usually points later in the decade.
NO. 04 · REPRODUCTIONS & BOOTLEGS
  • Licensed retro lines such as Mitchell & Ness (NFL throwbacks since about 2000, owned by Fanatics since 2022), Homage and Junk Food reprint old 49ers logos on new blanks. Their own brand tags give them away, and Homage names designs by year (a '93 crewneck, for example), so a year in a listing title proves nothing.
  • A Reebok tag dates NFL gear to 2002-2012, when Reebok held the league's exclusive uniform, sideline and cap license. A Nike tag is later still, since Nike took over the league's uniform contract in 2012.
  • Since 2009 the 49ers' uniforms have returned to the classic 1980s look, so modern gear can resemble 90s pieces. Check the tag and the copyright year rather than the color alone.
  • A familiar label is not automatic proof. Starter is still an active NFL licensee and the Nutmeg Mills name has been revived for vintage-style graphics, so check that the tag design, fabric and country of origin fit the period, not just the brand name.
  • Dealers list the same red flags again and again: wrong neck tags for the era, missing licensing text, a copyright year that doesn't match the tag, and artificial distressing. A cut-out tag removes the best evidence, so price that piece as unverified.

NO. 05 · SIZING

Tagged sizes from the 90s don't line up neatly with modern sizing, and cotton-rich fleece shrinks in hot washes, which is why Champion patented its shrink-resisting Reverse Weave cut. Ask the seller for pit-to-pit and top-to-bottom length in inches and compare them with a sweatshirt you already own. A stretched waistband or blown-out cuffs will make it fit looser than the numbers suggest.

NO. 07 · RELATED COLLECTIONS
NO. 08 · FIELD NOTES

How can I tell a 1996-or-later 49ers piece from an early-90s one?

Look at the red and the logo. In 1996 the team switched from bright scarlet to a deeper cardinal red and redrew the SF oval with a stretched black border and gold trim. Pre-1996 pieces show the older oval and brighter red.

Which Super Bowls did the 49ers win in the 90s?

Super Bowl XXIX, after the 1994 season. Super Bowl XXIV was played in early 1990 but belongs to the 1989 season, so its champions gear sits right at the start of the decade.

Does single stitching matter on a vintage sweatshirt?

Not much. Single-stitch hems are a T-shirt dating tell, common on tees made before the late 1990s. Sweatshirts finish the cuffs and waist with ribbed bands, so judge a crewneck by its tag, its licensing text and the copyright year on the print instead.

Are 1994 throwback graphics period pieces?

They can be. The 49ers wore 1955-style throwbacks through much of the 1994 season for the NFL's 75th anniversary. A 90s licensee tag and a matching copyright year separate a period piece from a modern retro reprint.
